Protecting Ireland's Biodiversity: The Importance of Maintaining Ecosystems

Climate change and biodiversity loss are two of the most pressing issues of our time. Yet, while the conversation around climate change has been gaining traction in recent years, the conversation around biodiversity has often been overlooked. This is a critical oversight, as biodiversity is essential for the functioning of our ecosystems and for human survival.

A recent UN assessment on biodiversity loss found that 1 in 4 Irish bird species are a serious conservation concern, and 77 species of Irish plants and animals are considered endangered. This alarming trend is primarily driven by human activity. Every time a hedgerow is removed to make room for development, it affects hundreds of animals, birds, and millions of insects and pollinators, leaving them without the food or shelter they need to survive. This, in turn, has a knock-on effect on the ecosystem, with species further up the chain increasingly affected by the reduced numbers of prey. The government-funded focus on monoculture, such as vast forests of Sitka spruce trees planted for profit, further reduces the available habitat for Ireland's animal, bird, and insect species.

The decline of biodiversity can have catastrophic consequences for life as we know it. Without insects, particularly pollinators, we would be unable to grow crops to feed ourselves or our animals. That's why it's essential that we start working with nature, instead of fighting against it. KRA Renewables, is a company passionate about maintaining and supporting Ireland's biodiversity, they provide individuals, businesses and government agencies with implementing biodiversity support and enhancement measures regardless of the area. They have worked with companies and provided biodiversity-friendly solutions that deliver verifiable results quickly.

For example, a recent project in Co. Wicklow, completed in December 2022, has already seen woodpeckers relocate to the area where previously there were none. The client couldn't be happier with the result. KRA Renewables has also conducted biodiversity advisory services for the Swords Business Campus, which now has bug hotels and beehives to help replenish the natural wildlife of the campus.

It's time for all of us to take notice of the critical issues surrounding biodiversity in Ireland and take action to support and protect it. Companies like KRA Renewables are leading the way, and we should all follow their example by implementing biodiversity-friendly solutions in our own lives, businesses, and communities. By working together, we can ensure a sustainable future for Ireland and for the planet as a whole.

Noteworthy conducted an in-depth analysis of the various issues surrounding biodiversity in Ireland. Their research included expert insight from biodiversity and ecological professionals and state reports, we encourage everyone to if they have not already done so.
